Choice Organic Teas
Seattle, Washington
choiceorganicteas.com
A firm belief in organics, with a dedication to ensure the ethical treatment of workers who cultivate tea, and a team of dedicated employees at Choice Organic Teas, has made the company a modern day tea pioneer. A brand of Granum, Inc. of Seattle, WA, Choice Organic Teas made its debut in 1989 as an outgrowth of the company founder, Blake Rankin’s active involvement in the organic marketplace. As North America’s #1 selling exclusively certified organic tea line, we have promoted the growth and development of organic agriculture in tea estates worldwide. In 2000, Choice Organic Teas became the first tea crafter in the United States to offer Fair Trade Certified™ tea. Today, they offer more varieties of Fair Trade Certified tea than any other tea company in North America, expanding awareness of a just form of trade with the developing world. Choice Organic Teas are manufactured in a certified organic facility where Green-e Certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) from wind power are purchased to offset 100 percent of the facility’s electricity.

Fresh Breeze Organic Dairy
Lyndon, Washington
freshbreezeorganic.com
Ernst & Teuntje Zweegman came from the Netherlands in the late 1800's. They homesteaded their dairy north of Lynden in 1901. Their daughter Helena married Arnoldus Blankers in 1905, and in 1911 gave birth to Bertus, Shawn Langley's grandpa. Grandpa Blankers started farming on his own across the fields, and soon married Angeline. Their daughter Joyce married Ken Douma, who later passed away, and had Rachelle, Shawn, and Heidi.
Shawn and his wife, Clarissa, took over the management of the dairy 15 years ago. Located near Lynden, Fresh Breeze Organic Dairy still harvests grass and corn off some of the same land as Shawn's great grandparents did in the early 20th century. As most of their farming practices were already organic, they decided to make the switch to operating a certified organic farm. Fresh Breeze is unique among organic dairies in that they raise and pasture their 180 dairy cows from birth, grow all of their own organic feed on their 400 plus acres, and bottle their milk products right on site.

Heritage Meats
Rochester, Washington
heritagemeatswa.com
Heritage Meats is an artisan butchering company that specializes in organic, locally grown and sustainable meat products and services. They are a certified USDA meat processor and also a Charter Member of the Puget Sound Meat Producers Cooperative.
Heritage Meats is owned and operated by Tracy Smaciarz. His father, Tom Smaciarz, acquired his meat cutting skills growing up on a farm slaughtering and processing the livestock. In 1968 Tom turned those skills into a career as a meat cutter for Safeway. Knowing he wanted to have his own business someday, he began purchasing meat equipment and cutting beef, game and making sausage for friends and family.
In 1977, East Olympia Meats officially opened. By 1989 Tom had retired from Safeway and East Olympia Meats became his full time job. From the very beginning Tracy was by his side, learning his father’s skills. After 19 years of successful business, Tom put away his knives and handed the business over to Tracy. Having outgrown the location in East Olympia, WA, he relocated the business to Rochester, WA and in turn renamed the company Heritage Meats.
A lot of things have changed over the life of the family business, but the quality and pride that goes into their work remains the same.
Island Spring Organics
Vashon Island, Washington
islandspring.com
Since 1976, Island Spring has been in the business of good health, making tofu and tofu-based products at their plant on Vashon Island in Washington State. Island Spring has grown from a small cottage industry, occupying an outbuilding on the Island's westside, to an established producer of healthy soybean-based products. It now serves the third-largest soyfood consumer base in the U.S. While demand for Island Spring products has grown, the company's growth has not been uneventful. In early Spring 1986, a fire destroyed all of Island Spring's manufacturing facility, leaving little intact. Undaunted, however, the dedicated Island Spring employees braved the freezing rain and snow salvaging what they could of the equipment. And, Phoenix-like, a new vision of the company emerged out of the ashes of the fire. In just 58 days, Island Spring built a new 4,000-square-foot facility just south of the town of Vashon. They began to develop plans to build a fully-automated, state-of-the-art 37,000-square-foot manufacturing facility -- on Vashon Island, of course.

Mt. Townsend Creamery
Port Townsend, Washington
mttownsendcreamery.com
Mt. Townsend Creamery is founded on the belief that Pacific Northwest dairy is a regional treasure. They source only the best local milk from the region to craft cheese with a sense of place. Owners Matt Day and Ryan Trail have worked to reinvigorate the dairy processing industry in the Northwest by introducing specialty cheeses made using traditional methods with a northwest flavor. It’s their goal to help rebuild the region’s dairy processing tradition while paying homage to the dairies that have allowed them to thrive. Workers at Mt. Townsend Creamery know cheese. The small staff depends upon teamwork and versatility as cheesemaking requires constant attention. Their cheesemakers are often seen at the farmers markets selling cheese and their retailer routinely leaves the store register to help drain whey and ladle curds. They are as dedicated to quality cheesemaking as we are to growing organic produce.

A love for the farm house cheese that her Mother made led Lora Lea and Rick on the journey from farming the land to starting Quillisascut Cheese Company.
